Microsoft Going Backwards?

Journal Entry: Fri Aug 4, 2006, 1:16 AM
I attended a Microsoft Technology roadshow yesterday (as part of my job) that spoke about .NET 3.0 (was WinFX), Windows Vista and Atlas (their ASP.NET answer to Ajax).

.NET 3.0 is an impressive technology, which allows you to write feature rich GUIs for Windows XP and Vista. For XP, the users will have to install the .NET 3.0 runtime but it comes as part of Vista. They herald it as a giant leap forward in GUI design for the windows. As the demonstrations continued, I thought "I could do that in Flash and DHTML" and I felt that by tying .NET 3.0 to the Windows platform for yet another generation was a mistake.

It was starkly aparent that there was no need for you to use Windows anymore, you could easily write you software using the Ajax technologies and host it through a web page, which is platform independent: run it one Windows, Linux or Apple computers.

Their answer to Ajax is weak and late: Atlas [link] Not actually part of .NET 3.0, it's a set of fledgling technologies that allow you to do less than free, independent libraries such as Dojo [link] Of course, you can't use Dojo with ASP as the compilation rejects it. Atlas, however, is not mature and has severe compatibility issues.

The rest of the web are moving away from installing software and I hoped that the .NET 3.0 framework would be platform independent and focussed on the web. Unfortunately, they're bloating it further with more application specific libraries that require you to have a Windows machine and I dare say Vista.

Ello, Noticed you came and dropped by my page so I thought I'd do the same.

Some very cool artwork here! I'm loving the droid pics, reminds me strangely of Star Wars Ep 1 with the droids going over the hill to fight. Gonna have to fav that one me thinks!

Good to see another Reading person on here :) Come along to the Reading DA meet, if we ever pull it together lol.

~brainwipe:iconbrainwipe: Jul 14, 2006, 3:38:12 AM
Yes, perhaps it does. After all, do you know the name of the street that Walkabout is on? It must have a name but I'm stuffed if I know what it is! Only lived in Reading 11 years, you'd think I'd know!

I think I know where Bar4 is, along from Revolution. Oddly it seems we can accurately navigate through the centre of Reading purely by clubs and bars! Oz is still the same sort of venue. They run live bands in there once in a while - local bands normally. The audience tends to be the girlfriends of the band memebers, though. Not such a bad place, in all.

no no, although bar 4 is near the station, it's further up near harris arcade - near the walkabout? i have no idea what bar oz turned in to in the end.... no one goes there anyway =P.

Ah, the horn! Have popped in on the crawl between Sweeney Tods and Pav's. I like Pavs too, although the seating is not ideal. Not been into Bar4. Is that what used to be called Bar Oz, by the station? To be honest, I don't pay a lot of attention to the way in which the town centre changes, I just wander about in a daze!

wow, that's so strange to see someone say that on DA, i've been to the rising sun before, been spending more time in the horn recently, and as for bars - sometimes pavs, but more often Bar4. used to hang out more in the purple turtle but it's become even more of a dive recently so me and my friends have been going else where. maybe i'll see you around :)

I live not far from the centre of town (near Christchurch Green), so it's a short walk. Me missus and I like to go to 'The TUC', which is now known as a The Face Bar on a Friday night for a bit of the old metal. Alternatively, we like to head to the Rising Sun pub by the Station (not the art centre).

I started back at school by just fiddling. Endless fiddling and trying to reproduce other people's ideas and work. It's the best way to work. Get hold of Wings or some other free 3D package and have a go!
